• Twizel Salmon & Wine Festival, late February. A food and wine festival beside Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel, listed for 28 February in the 2026 calendar. Confirm the 2027 date.
• Winter season, June–August. The official Mackenzie site promotes the region as a winter playground, with skiing, snowboarding and log fires.

Mount Cook & Mackenzie After Dark

The Mackenzie is home to the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand’s largest dark sky reserve at 4,367 square kilometres. Strict lighting controls keep the night sky clear, so the main thing to do here after dark is look up. Hours and seasons change, so confirm with each operator.

• Hooker Valley Track: an easy, well-formed walk of about 10 km return with views of Aoraki Mount Cook, glacial rivers and a glacier lake.
• Short walks around Mount Cook Village: walks from 30 minutes to a few hours, suited to every fitness level.
• Lake Pukaki lookout: an easy roadside stop for the turquoise lake and the mountain beyond.
• Church of the Good Shepherd: a small church on the shore of Lake Tekapo.
